Bannack | HDR

The following images were taken, experimenting with HDR photography. HDR stands for high dynamic range. The process is done by taking more than one exposure and merging the images taking the best light from each. Enjoy:

f/2.8 | ISO 100 | 83mm | Canon 5D mk1

Editing Portraits

:: Portrait Enhancement ::

I was experimenting with the "butterfly" lighting effect and was pleased with the results. As far as post-processing I adjusted the exposure, curves, fill light, contrast, and white balance. I reduced the noise a tad to help soften the skin. Later I air brushed the skin and touched up the eyes by boosting the colors, whites, and sharpness. Next I removed blemishes and such. I also saturated the lips a smidgen. Then I adjusted the model's eyebrow and nose in the liquify filter. Enjoy:

"Julianne" | 16 Oct 2011 7:40pm | living room
f/2.8 | 1/125s | ISO 100 | 75mm | Canon 5D mk1

:: Replace Color ::

Though the edit is subtle, I did replace the stripes of the model's outfit to change from brown to more of a blue hue. This was done by using the Select -> Color Range tool in Photoshop and sampling the color and adjusting the fuzziness to refine the selection. Then I adjusted the hue.

Portraiture

The following images were from the study of portraiture. I explored various compositions and lighting. Enjoy:

:: Side Composition ::

An image is more appealing to the eye when the subject is positioned in the frame on the rule-of-third's points of interest. This side composition places the subject the the left of the frame with pleasing negative space to the right. Notice also the flow; the model is looking into that space, rather than facing the edge of the frame. I placed a flash in front of the model, directing the light towards him (and the camera). I did not filter the flash, since I wanted a hard edge light to trace the model's profile.

"Edge" | 16 Oct 2011 7:25pm | living room
f/2.8 | ISO 100 | 1/125s | 75mm | Canon 5D mk1

:: Head Shot ::

A simple yet well lit and exposed head shot. There are two light sources: and key light off to camera left, and a hair (or rim) light off to camera right. The key light was filtered with an umbrella and the rim light was not.

"The Smolder" | 16 Oct 2011 7:31pm | living room
f/2.8 | ISO 100 | 1/125s | 75mm | Canon 5D mk1

:: Full Body ::

This shot contains both the ambient light as well as a auxiliary fill light off to camera right. Aperture, shutter, ISO, and flash power was adjusted so that both the ambient and auxiliary lights were balance. I wish I had a more shallow depth of field with ~2.8 aperture, however I was at the lowest ISO and I could not speed up the shutter speed without loosing sync with the external flash.

"Bundle" | 15 Oct 2011 6:07pm | north Rexburg
f/5.0 | ISO 100 | 1/200s | 126mm | Canon 5D mk1

:: Candid Group ::

"Abuela" | 23 Sep 2011 7:28pm | Provo, UT
f/2.8 | 1/60s | 103mm | Canon 5D mk1

:: Group Posed ::

"In Her Arms" | 15 Oct 2011 6:02pm | north Rexburg
f/4.0 | ISO 100 | 1/200s | 200mm | Canon 5D mk1

:: Environment ::

"Pickin' Apples" | 8 Oct 2011 2:26pm | Iona, ID
f/2.8 | ISO 100 | 1/1250s | 70mm | Canon 5D mk1
